I want to share something that happened to me when I was 15 years old. I know this is happening all over the world and it saddens me.
It must be spoken.
I went on a trip to Maui with my Dad when I was 15. One day, my Dad was taking a nap in the hotel and I was lying out on a secluded beach on a lawn chair reading.
An older man approached me and pulled his pants down and displayed his genitals to me and asked me if I wanted to touch him. I said no and looked down at my book. He mumbled something and walked away towards the town.
I remember thinking that man was crazy and how disgusting he was. I didn’t really blink an eye at it at the time though.
Years later, I realized how crazy it was that that man had the audacity to ask a young girl alone on the beach if she would touch him.
He was probably considering raping me.
Point being said… that was not okay.
This moment was one of the moments I wrote in my inventory when I did the 12-step program. It was something pivotal for me, something I would never forget.
Thankfully, nothing happened… but I know this is happening to people all over the world on a much deeper level. According to RAIN… Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.
Everywhere- traumas are interwoven into our lives. They allow us to reanalyze, to dig deep, to ask questions, to feel pain, and create a soft space of compassion for ourselves and loved ones.
How can we look at these experiences and make light? How can we transform the pain into something beautiful?
Here are some ways that you can cleanse + nourish yourself after abuse and the years to follow…
I pray that you can utilize these practices. If you have or need more help, I’ve listed resources below.
Sending love your way if you have experienced sexual abuse presently or in the past. May your experience be a door to awakening and compassion for you.
Love,
Jenny
